Recovery is possible (RIP):
Very nice small live CD. You can get it at this address
Gentoo Live CD
Then, too, a Gentoo live-cd makes a passable rescue disk, despite the fact that it was not designed for that job. I would probably not use it for serious rescues (e.g. HDD controller crashes) but it has saved my butt many times for more minor problems.
System Rescue CD
SystemRescueCd also offers a plethora of tools such as Memtest86+ to test your memory and testdisk to fix partitions. If these don't work, try Linux Diagnostic Tools or the Sleuth Kit.
Knoppix Linux Live CD
Knoppix makes a great rescue distro, for Linux and for Windows. It is available on the Freedom Toaster and you can download it from: knoppix.org
INSERT
Insert is a cut down rescue version of knoppix. It fits on a buisness-card CD, and contains Fluxbox, filesystem tools (including captive-ntfs) network tools, etc etc.
Oh, and it can download Firefox if you need it (not that useful in ZA without any bandwidth to speak of, but hey)
Get it here
Ubuntu Live CD
Ubuntu can since the Hoary version (like Knoppix) install packages during a live CD session.

"The most GNU/Linux on 1 floppy disk" Home Page
It is useable with 8Meg RAM, but with 4Meg it gives you mount, dd, fdisk and wishes you luck.
