Layer 7 - Application Layer
FTP, HTTP, NFS, SMTP, etc.
Explain how actual programs work. Will give small TCP client/server example (Dining philosophers problem with central waiter). Maybe if there is time I'll demonstrate how to write programs that use UDP datagrams and ICMP as well.

After this lecture you should be able to understand TCP/IP networking.

3 boxes, A, B, C. How does A and C communicate through B.
3 boxes on the same LAN going through a gateway that routes over PPP to a box on the other side (the internet).
(explanation of which parts of these examples apply to layer 1/2, and which covers layer 3 as well (and above)

Below you can find the notes for the second lecture. Please don't distribute.

21-08-2001: TCP/IP:

Presenter: Abraham van der Merwe
Venue: UCT Old ChemEng LT2
Time: 6:30pm

Notes: This meeting will be the first in a 4 or 5 lecture series on TCP/IP.

More information on the series will follow in the next week. However, in explanation, it was felt that this series would help bring the novice and the advanced groups of CLUG members closer together.

Most of our talks are on services that use TCP/IP in some way; and it would make the talks far more useful if the speaker could assume that most members have a certain level of TCP/IP knowledge.

By the end of this series everyone we attends (and we encourage everyone to attend) have a well rounded understanding of TCP/IP the protocol and the services that use it.

Subjects:

OSI Model, TCP/IP model and origins
Layer 1 - Physical
Connectors, Pins, etc.
Layer 2 - Data Link
HDLC, PPP, FDDI, ATM, IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet), IEEE 802.5 (Token Ring), etc.
Detailed explanation of PPP. I will also demonstrate this with a Livingston Portmaster and PPP on a client Linux box with debugging.
If there is time left, I might cover IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet) as well.

Below you can find the notes for the second lecture. Please don't distribute.
