Libre, Lightweight and 'lternative Linux Browsers

I spoke about Zen and Dillo. They are the browsers which meet all the criteria on my wishlist:

  • Compact
  • Fast
  • Written in C and only C
  • Require a minimum of support libraries
  • Licensed under the GPL
  • Can handle graphics

Note that both cheetah and gzilla also meet these requirements, but cheetah is not yet in a runnable state, and I was unable to get hold of the source for gzilla.

Unfortunately both Zen and Dillo are lacking functionality, but I hope to make one of them my browser of choice in the not too distant future.

Dillo

Dillo is one of the fastest browsers around - its IO subsystem is designed to handle multiple requests efficiently. Its rendering subsystem is still incomplete but is also interesting as it borrows a number of concepts from Gtk. Dillo is written by Jorge Arellano Cid and a number of contributers.

Zen

Zen is another promising browser written by Tomas Berndtsson. Its rendering subsystem is more complete than that of Dillo, though it also seems a bit slower. A neat feature of Zen is that it is designed to handle multiple display systems. At the moment it supports both X and the frame buffer.

Others

Here is a list of free browsers and their main dependencies. Please let me know if there are omissions or inaccuracies:
