UCT Freedom Toaster
UCT now has a Freedom Toaster to call its own, open to the public, and able to burn your favourite OSS software 24hrs a day.
The toaster has 3 DVD writers, a touch screen interface, and a public WiFi hotspot for downloading OSS goodness.
What is on the toaster
- See this page
- Most distributions are available in both i386 and amd64/em64t varieties. What does this mean?
Where
UCT Computer Science Building, Ground Floor. Go in the front door, turn down the right passage, and it's on your right. Behind the toaster is the UCT Shuttleworth Lab, open to all Mathematical Sciences students.
The CS Building is on University avenue, on the North side of Jameson Hall.
It spans D7-8 on the UCT Upper Campus Map
Visiting UCT
Information on visiting UCT. If you want to park there, you'll need to get a visitor's permit at the Visitor's office (as you drive in on the North side, E9 on the map). Then you can try and find a parking place. The best method is to beg the boom operator to let you in and drive up to P7, P8, P9, P10, or P16 (see map) and try and find a free parking bay (that doesn't have staff only a red triangle in it), or one labelled "VISITORS".
Does the toaster have a network port
We have a public wifi hotspot in the toaster, from wich you can access LEG's huge ftp mirror site to update your laptop, or download ISOs.
It is called TSL-Toaster, on channel 4, 802.11g, unencrypted. You should get a private IP by DHCP, and be able to access ftp://ftp.leg.uct.ac.za/, http://www.leg.uct.ac.za/, http://www.za.debian.org/, and http://www.za.netbsd.org/. We are sorry that we had to lock the AP down to these sites, but having an Open AP on the UCT network isn't easy.
Unfortunately, we don't have a public gigabit-LAN port, although we've requested this.
Where can I get blank CDs/DVDs
Brain Books in the Cissie Gool Plaza (C7 on the map) sells, as does Campus Camera in PD Hahn (C8).
However, media on campus is frighteningly expensive. R15 / DVD anyone? Rather bring your own media.
Who maintains this toaster
UCT Leg and (occasionally) the nice people at The Shuttleworth Lab keep an eye on this toaster.
LEG is basically the part of CLUG that looks after the UCT side of things (like CLUG's servers). You can email requests to legadmin-AT-leg-DOT-uct-DOT-ac-DOT-za
Common Issues
- If a download dialog pops up, call the LEG admins, and ask them to fix it. It's a known problem.
- Don't use scratched / dirty CDs/DVDs, they aren't verified.
- Make sure you don't burn a CD image onto a DVD, it might not work, and certainly isn't the best use of a DVD.
Frogfoots Freedom Toaster
Frogfoot Networks no longer have a Freedom Toaster.
