Overview

For Software Freedom Day 2009, CLUG will be doing some maintenance on its Freedom Toaster.

Our plans are: Spend a day fixing up our Freedom Toaster and have a bit of a party. There are a whole pile of things that need to be done, so you don't need any insane Linux-wrangling skills. We need people who can use powertools, people who can chat, and people who would like some help with some linux-problem, and people who'd like to develop front-end software for the toaster.

Where and When

10am, Saturday the 19th in The Shuttleworth Lab, behind the Freedom Toaster, CS Building, UCT Upper Campus. Directions here (it's a weekend so you won't need a visitors ticket).

TODO

Before-hand:

  • Source replacement fan
  • Source 1x SATA HDD
  • Plan software development
  • Food?
  • Internet proxy (Stefano) & Wifi AP

On the day:

  • Replace LCD
  • Replace 1x CD Writer
  • Re-install ubuntu & toaster (on new HDD)

Progress

  • Source replacement monitor - DONE tumbleweed
  • Source replacement writers x1 - DONE tumbleweed
  • Source replacement fan - DONE - Georg
  • Source 1x SATA HDD

Software

The existing software can be found on Launchpad.

It uses a full-screen Firefox, with apache + Perl CGIs to handle the UI and burning.

Another toaster project in Canada wrote their own (python-gtk, single-DVD-writer) software.

The ideal would be to replace the current perl system with a full-screen Python-GTK application. This would make modification and maintenance far easier, and improve UI latency.

RSVP

Please add your name to this list if you plan on attending. We don't need RVSPs from everyone - but an idea of numbers helps us to plan:
